The matt black and wood kitchen with a retro feel
Vintage and modern at the same time
Retro yet chic!
The Melia Model - Retro Trend is a kitchen with the vintage spirit. There can be no doubt that this decorative style is a perfect fit for this Haussmannian apartment. In a place like this, steeped in history, and more generally in all old houses, we naturally want to retain traditional elements such as cornices on the ceilings or wooden parquet flooring. So the modern kitchen must be able to blend in without disrupting the space and atmosphere with which this home is imbued. To inject a retro spirit into a room such as the kitchen, choose natural colours (cream, black or wood) for walls and furniture, and opt for chic accessories in copper or gold. Lastly, household appliances which look too high-tech are to be concealed as much as possible.
My little black kitchen
This little kitchen is entirely dressed in black. A bold choice, and something not normally used when space is lacking in a house. Yet it works beautifully, and there are several reasons for this. The black of the furniture is perfectly balanced with the white of the walls: the interplay of contrasts between the two is timeless, and has the added advantage of being a classic of retro style. And there are several shades of black in this kitchen: mainly matt blacks for the fronts, profiles and worktop, and a touch of glossy black for the wall units. Thanks to this cleverly placed glossy finish, light from both windows is reflected and illuminates the room. Meanwhile, matt black lends a natural elegance, enhanced by gold accessories that elevate the overall look. Even the sink plays its part, blending with the colour of the worktop.
Precious wood
To expand this kitchen, the choice could have been made to remove a partition and install a central island, but the desired retro-chic spirit would have been lost. Instead, the partition separating the kitchen from the living room was removed and replaced by a set of made-to-measure units. To attenuate the corridor effect, an opening was created towards the living room, allowing light to circulate and visually enlarge the space. The kitchen therefore benefits from an extension designed to provide a perfect transition between these two areas. On the living-room side, there is access to a dining area as well as numerous open and closed storage spaces for placing books or decorations. To mark the boundary, the designer of the Melia Model - Retro Trend had the idea of adding an additional material: wood. The combination of black and wood is a classic that seems a natural choice for this apartment. By choosing a zebrano veneer (an exotic wood species reminiscent of zebra stripes), an elegant rendering is achieved which evokes the decor and style of the 1950s. This precious-looking wood has been used for original fronts that fit seamlessly into the living room.
Floor to ceiling storage
Thanks to this bespoke arrangement which acts as a partition wall, and to the numerous units included, this small kitchen enjoys sufficient storage space. The design may be retro, but modern comfort is still required. The chosen fit-out enables good organisation and an entirely uncluttered worktop. The installation of a full-length unit making maximum use of space ensures that all crockery can be accommodated. To avoid any feeling of loss of space, the Melia Model - Retro Trend incorporates different levels in the upper section. Even with constraints linked to the presence of windows and the size of this room, this kitchen provides plenty of storage space, making it a real pleasure to use.
